Rikshaw Design - gorgeous bohemian baby nursery bedding and accessories

rikshaw-design-elephant-pillows.jpg

The pretty stuffed elephants above are an introduction to the lovely fabric designs and subtle colors of Rikshaw Design nursery sets.

Rikshaw Design offers beautiful bohemian baby nursery gear in four styles. Most of their style sets offer bedding, burp and bip accessories, diaper pouches, and the charming stuffed elephant pillows.

Below is a close up of the Bombay bedding set…

Each bedding set includes a bumper, a quilt and a bedskirt. In the Bombay bedding, the bumper is box-style with great french knots plus contrast ties and piping. “The quilt has different patterns on both sides and diamond hand-quilting.” Bedskirts come with box pleating, and all bedding is lined, 100% cotton voile and machine washable.

I love the Lali crib set (below) as well. The beautiful curvy quilt offers a great nursery look.

Emergency child care: what to do for a cut tongue or cheek

Once your little one gets teeth, biting becomes an issue. If you’re lucky he won’t be biting others, but your baby might bite himself. I’m not sure exactly why bit cheeks, tongues, and lips are so common among young kids, but I’m guessing it’s because…

1. Little kids are curious about their new teeth and like to run their lip or tongue over them.

2. Small kids are unsteady walkers and more inclined to fall and bite themselves.

3. Little ones aren’t the best eaters. They chew too fast, stuff their little mouth, and bite down on their silverware.

What to do if your child bites himself:

Don’t be too upset by the blood. Many a small child is just fine until they notice that their mama has lost it at the sight of blood. Make sure you know that cuts inside the mouth or on the lip tend to bleed a lot for such a small area. Seeing what appears to be a lot of blood is normal for a fresh mouth cut. Stay calm, so you don’t freak your tot out.

  • Have your child rinse his mouth with lukewarm water.
  • Hold a cold compress to his lip.
  • If the inside of your child’s mouth is cut, hold a small piece of clean gauze to the area. Press firmly, but not too hard. Gauze should stop bleeding in an average cut in a wet area (like the mouth).

When to call the doctor or dentist:

  • If god forbid, your tot actually bit part of his tongue off - I know - not cool. But if he falls into a table or hard enough to the floor it could happen. This is not a treat it yourself situation, go to the emergency room stat.
  • If the bleeding won’t stop after 15 minutes AND pressure from the gauze doesn’t seem to be halting the blood flow, call the dentist or doctor. You may need to go into the clinic.
  • If your child is REALLY complaining of pain at the spot where he bit himself, and it’s been more than half a day, that’s unusual, so I’d call the dentist or doctor.

Best time of day for a baby nap

670509_rays_of_dreams.jpg

If you’re a mama, I bet you think any time of day is a great time for a nap, however, babies have other ideas. Once babies pass the 16 month (or so) mark, their nap schedule can get a little screwy. For one thing, older babies are ready to switch from a couple of naps per day to just one nap. Also, older babies tend to resist naps, which can result in an ultra cranky tot, who unexpectedly falls asleep about two hours before bedtime, which in turn messes with their nighttime sleep schedule. It’s frustrating.

Best time of day for a baby to have a nap:

Babies are individuals, so I’m leery of giving you a specific perfect nap time. However, if your baby wakes at a normal time, say 7am, has an active morning, and a good lunch, she’ll likely be ready for a nice nap at some point soon after lunch. Somewhere between 12:30 pm - 2 pm is a good nap time for most older babies.

Tips that can help make nap-time easier:

  • Set up a routine - just like you have a routine at bedtime, you should also have a nap-time routine. Have some calm playtime, brush teeth, read a story, and so on.
  • Have a normal wake-up time - if your baby is always getting up at a different time in the morning, it’s harder to set a nap -time. Make sure her schedule is fairly the same each morning.
  • Be flexible - just because your baby normally takes a nap at 1pm, there’s no reason to always stick to that. If your tot is especially cranky, feed her lunch early, and have an early nap. If she’s all hyped up at 1pm, take her to the park for 30 minutes for some active play, which may help wear her out.
